Give Warm Front a call on 0800 316 2805, or have a look at their website at . They send out a surveyor to have a look at what you've got in terms of central heating and insulation and even if you're renting privately you can still get grants for the likes of better insulation, boiler upgrades and probably other things too.

They came out and insulated my entire loft for just over £100, though they weren't able to help with my central heating because it's coal-fired.

You can plug the gaps in your sash window with newspaper to reduce draughts, buy a special type of shrink film which you stick to your window frames with double sided tape to give secondary glazing, fit foam on your door jambs and use draught excluders on the bottoms (make your own ?). Doubtful you have many rights as a tenant. Always wear a jumper and even a coat when sitting.

Begin by covering the windows. Drafty windows are horrible. Buy the plastic wrap that you use a hairdryer to shrink. It's inexpensive and effective in stopping drafts. Also put a draft stop at the bottom of every door, even closets. Some closets are not well insulted and drafts come from under the doors. If you do not want to buy odd little draft blockers shaped like freaky animals, you could simply stuff some old socks with rags and place those at the bottom of the doors. Rugs will also help warm a room. If your feet are warm you will feel warmer.
Good luck with getting the landlord to fix the place up. I can't even imagine that happening.
